Earlier this year, Mo Versi, a man best known to many for giving information about software updates on Twitter, left his post at HTC after 8 years at the company. At that time, Versi told his followers to direct any questions regarding to Jeff Gordon, HTC's Global Head of PR. However, Gordon (no, not the NASCAR driver) is now also leaving the company after nearly 8 years to pursue a new endeavor.

Report: Google says no Pixel watch coming this year

Earlier this year, it was rumored that Google was planning on releasing up to three variants of an upcoming Pixel watch. Details at the time even included three separate codenames and chipset specifications. According to an exclusive report published earlier today by Tom's Guide, that may not be the case anymore.

August 2018 Android platform distribution numbers are out: Oreo up another 2.5%, no sign of Pie (yet)

August isn't even properly over, but already Google has pushed the month's platform distribution numbers, detailing the precise statistics of Android versions used across devices. Last month's statistics were of particular interest after the two-month gap, resulting in some inflated numbers, but this month things are back to normal. As always, newer versions of Android are up, and older versions are (mostly) down. Interestingly, Pie has yet to rear its head, despite launching earlier this month.

FCC documents for the Pixel 3 and 3 XL become public, confirm Band 12/71 support and wireless charging

In case you somehow needed more evidence that the Pixel 3 and 3 XL are happening (and that there is not a mythical 'backup' 3 XL with no notch), both devices have now been certified by the FCC. The online documents don't reveal much that hasn't already been spoiled, but there are a few interesting details that appear to be new.

The device with FCC ID 'A4RG013A' is likely the small Pixel 3, and 'A4RG013C' is the Pixel 3 XL.

This is the Google Assistant UI for the upcoming Pixel Stand

About a month ago, one of our Google app teardowns revealed that a 'Pixel Stand' was in development - presumably a charging dock for Google's upcoming phones. A few strings in the app indicated that Google Assistant would offer suggestions and complete actions while docked, and now that has been confirmed by new screenshots.

Kieron Quinn, developer of Custom Quick Settings and other applications, managed to activate the Pixel Stand UI by sending a special intent to the Google app (and enabling a certain flag).

Huawei announces Mate 20 Lite, coming September 5

The Huawei Mate 20 Lite was leaked in graphic detail earlier this month, exposing a big battery, four cameras, and a notched display. Huawei officially unveiled the device today, confirming many of the previously rumored details — plus a buzzy and entirely unsurprising focus on AI.

The Mate 20 Lite is powered by Huawei's Kirin 710 chip, along with four gigs of RAM — not six, as previous leaks suggested. The battery is a little larger than we thought it'd be, though, at a hefty 3,750 mAh.

At IFA, Huawei announced its new flagship system-on-chip, the Kirin 980. Following in the footsteps of its fantastic predecessor, the 980 is the first commerical 7nm SoC, meaning that Huawei beat Qualcomm to the punch. It uses a combination of modified Cortex-A76 and A55 cores, a new Mali-G76 GPU, and a dual Neural Processing Unit (NPU).

When Google announces that a feature is rolling out to everyone, it should probably follow that up with a huge asterisk and footprint to clarify that it doesn't mean everyone, everyone, just most people, minus a few exceptions, and some more exceptions, and even more exceptions. Biometric authentication is nothing new for laptops. However, no Chromebook, even Google's flagship Pixelbook, has ever had a fingerprint sensor or facial recognition. Sure, you could use your phone's fingerprint sensor via Smart Lock, but that's just not the same. On paper, it matches most of 2018's flagships, but the aggressive pricing makes it a great value when compared to most of its competition. Firefox will block tracking scripts by default, starting in 2019

Mozilla has always been a strong advocate for internet privacy. More recently, Mozilla has been working on Firefox Focus, a simplified browser that blocks all trackers/cookies and erases browsing data after you close the app. Now the company wants to take privacy a step further, by blocking all tracking scripts by default on the main Firefox browser.

"Many of the harms of unchecked data collection are completely opaque to users and experts alike," Mozilla said in a blog post, "only to be revealed piecemeal by major data breaches.

ZTE reveals €649 Axon 9 Pro, forgets why people liked the Axon 7

ZTE is now back in business, and today at IFA it revealed its latest Axon flagship phone — which won't be coming to the US. With no Axon 8, ZTE has jumped straight up to the Axon 9 (with a superfluous "Pro" suffix). In its short keynote, the company was adamant that it was striving "once again to improve the impressive sound of Axon," and apparently the best way to do that was by removing the Axon 7's high-end analog audio/headphone jack experience.

Electrolux smart ovens will work with Google Assistant in early 2019

I personally would never want an oven that is connected to the internet, but if you happen to have a smart oven from Electrolux, here's some good news for you. The company announced today that its smart ovens will soon have Google Assistant support, allowing you to change temperatures or turn the oven on/off with voice commands.

"By linking a connected oven to the Google Assistant," Electrolux said, "consumers will receive help with daily functions such as turning their oven on and off, selecting the right cooking program and desired temperature." The company said Assistant support will go live in "early 2019."

Budget phones are inherently going to have some tradeoffs, and a less-obvious one has been discovered: lack of support for Widevine L1 DRM.

Android supports a wide range of DRM modules, including ClearKey, Widevine, Microsoft Playready, and others. Widevine is by far the most popular method, and there are multiple levels; L1 means a device has full Widevine support, while L3 means only partial compatibility.

The Pixel 3 XL has been leaking left and right, and people haven't been happy with its massive notch. We're finally getting to see the Pixel 3 for the first time, and it looks like this may be the Pixel to get this year for those of you notch haters.
