Motorola has just published the Z3 Play's Pie kernel source code on GitHub.
With this source code, developers will be able to create custom software for the Z3 Play, codenamed "beckham," on Pie, such as ROMs and recoveries.

Facebook's Messenger app has gotten pretty hefty over the years, now weighing in at over 100MB. Some phones can't even run it properly, hence the need for a Lite version. The worldwide smartphone market hasn't just slowed, it's been in decline for the last year or so. Whatever you attribute that to — rising prices, longer-lasting devices, fewer necessary improvements — many major OEMs including Samsung and Apple have seen sales weaken. In comparison, though, Huawei continues to see explosive growth, especially in China.
Yesterday Huawei published its annual financial report for 2018, revealing just over 107 billion dollars in revenue for the year, with around 8.8 billion of that being profit.

Many, including us here at Android Police, have felt that Android TV is languishing as a platform, especially considering some of its best standalone hardware is coming up on four years old — admittedly, it has aged gracefully. According to a recent interview from TechHive, Google's commitment to the platform is only increasing, though, and both big changes and new hardware are planned.
The biggest takeaway from the interview is that more hardware reveals should coming "in the next couple of weeks," presumably indicating they'll be announced at or around Google's upcoming I/O developer conference, with devices set to arrive in the fall.

Both the Portal and Portal+ are currently only sold in the United States and Canda, but Facebook announced today that both models will come to Europe this fall. As part of the expansion, WhatsApp calling will be supported.

Anki has been one of the leading companies in this new age of smartphone-connected toys, alongside Sphero. Sadly, Anki has run out of money and is shutting its doors.

The company also released licensed versions of their products, like the Fast & Furious Overdrive set.

Some of you may remember as far back as 2016, when a little project called the Superbook hit Kickstarter, aiming to turn our smartphones into laptops for a mere $100. It was a tremendously ambitious dream that didn't really work out in practice, and sadly Sentio, the company behind the Superbook, has recently announced that it ran out of money after shipping only 75% of pre-orders.
The news was revealed in a very long announcement via the Kickstarter project published a few days ago.

LG has released its latest quarterly results, and you're never going to guess what happened. It's getting to be an old story at this point: LG makes money, but the smartphone segment drags it down. That's the case with LG's latest Q1 2019 results.
The headlining number is an operating profit of KRW 900.6 billion (USD 801.25 million) on sales of KRW 14.92 trillion (USD 13.27 billion). That's not bad, but it's a 20% drop from last year at this time.

The Android port of GRID Autosport has been a long time coming. Premium Chromebooks are a niche product category; most Chromebooks in any price range can do pretty much all the same things. The difference comes in how well a particular device handles those tasks — and while HP's Chromebook x360 14 G1 is unlikely to convert anyone already against high-end Chrome OS devices on principle, it's an extremely competent laptop that's worth a look for anybody interested in a quality Chrome machine.

Whether you're momentarily traveling to or have recently moved to a new country or city, you'll probably look at Google Maps or other travel and discovery apps to find places to visit nearby. The same can be true if you're just planning a trip, or if you've been living somewhere for a while but still want to discover new locations around you. Maps' Explore tab serves that purpose well, and has received a small update now to improve discovery of not just places, but also nearby areas or districts.

You may remember that back in February at MWC 2019 in Barcelona, Energizer unveiled a boatload of phones. The most bizarre of the lot had a humungous 18,000mAh battery, dual pop-up front cameras, and it could seemingly also be used to break through glass in an emergency. In news that will shock nobody, it has spectacularly failed to reach its lofty Indiegogo crowdfunding target.
Built by French company Avenir Telecom who license the Energizer brand for use on phones, the P18K managed just 1% (£11,551) of its £923,791 goal.

Switzerland is known for many things, such as its beautiful mountains, lovely villages, and high living expenses. To make it easier for the Swiss to spend their hard-earned cash, Google is launching its mobile payment system in the country today. Google Pay's support documents speak of a rollout for customers of Cornèrcard, Bonuscard, Swiss Bankers, Revolut, and boon. As usual, only credit or debit cards are supported as payment methods.
Just as in other countries with Pay, Swiss Android users can now pay contactless in shops and use the service online as an alternative to PayPal and others.

Alphabet — Google's parent company — had its Q1 earnings call yesterday amid its slowest growth in 3 years. A 17% year-on-year revenue increase has some investors concerned and Google CEO Sundar Pichai had to answer some tough questions about the company's hardware prospects. One analyst even went as far as to compare the Pixel phones with Microsoft's unsuccessful smartphone lineup.
According to Alphabet CFO Ruth Porat, "recent pressures in the premium smartphone market" were to blame for lower than expected Pixel sales.

Samsung has just released its first-quarter earning calls today, and its previously released profit warnings turned out to be true. The company made a total of KRW 6.2 trillion ($5.3 billion), which is about 60 percent less than last year's first quarter. However, Samsung says that its Galaxy S10 series still sold very well.
The first two quarters of a year are traditionally weaker in the tech industry than the last two, but this drop is significant – the company made this little money back in Q1 of 2016, and that number is only slightly bigger than 2016 Q3's Note 7 debacle.

While we're not usually fans of "cash back" discount schemes as stand-ins for real sales, when making a big ticket purchase, they can be huge motivators to get products off shelves. Today is definitely such an occasion, with TCL's well-reviewed and range-topping R617 55" 4K HDR TV available for effectively $450 after rewards are taken into account when you using a qualifying Amazon credit card to make your purchase.
The TV is already on sale for its lowest price on Amazon ever ($530), but Amazon is offering an additional 10% in rewards cash back (on top of the standard 5% for the Prime Visa) on this specific model, meaning once those rewards points hit your account, you'll get back nearly $80 in Amazon Rewards.
