CamScanner fell victim to rogue ad network, hopes to be back in the Play Store soon

CamScanner recently had to leave the Play Store after security researchers found that it distributed malware between June and July this year. Today, its developer released a statement saying that it fell victim to an advertisement SDK provided by AdHub that loaded the malicious module into its product. It has since cut ties with the network and removed the malware.

The firm pinpoints the introduction of malware to CamScanner 5.11.7, though we found that versions ranging from 5.11.3 to 5.12.0 were also unsafe – see our previous coverage for a more detailed breakdown.

Cryptographic key used to sign one of Facebook's Android apps compromised

The security of Android app updates hinges on the secrecy of a given app's signing key. It's how app updates are verified as secure, and if it falls into the wrong hands, false updates could be distributed containing nefarious changes. As a result, developers usually guard signing keys quite closely, but someone at Facebook seriously messed up. A key used by the company to digitally sign its Free Basics by Facebook app has been compromised, and third-party apps reusing the key have been spotted online.

Plex partners with Warner Bros. to stream TV and movies

Plex made its name by helping people organize and stream their media libraries, which may or may not have included pirated material. Plex also has a handful of streaming channels, but the new agreement is the biggest one yet. Plex has teamed up with Warner Bros. to stream free content to US-based users.

The deal means Plex users (again, US-only) will have access to a selection of TV and films streaming via the Plex app.

When it first launched, YouTube Kids had a one size fits all approach for all kids. But since children are interested in different things as they grow up, the service introduced separate content levels last year: Younger (ages 8 and below) and Older (8-12). After CamScanner introduced intrusive, unskippable full-screen advertisements to its free PDF scanner back in April, it now finds itself in the middle of another controversy. This time, it might mean the end to its life on the Play Store altogether. Kaspersky security researchers found evidence of malware in multiple versions of the app, published between June and July this year. While our own tests conclude that the August versions are free of malware, Google still decided to pull the plug and banned the app that accumulated more than 100 million downloads from the Play Store altogether.

Apple Music beta adds Chromecast support and 100,000 radio stations

Earlier this month, Apple Music received a beta update that added a new dark mode and synchronized lyrics with the music. While that did cross off two of the most wanted features in the app, there was still one request that Apple hadn't yet answered: Chromecast support. Now, nearly four years after the service launched on Android, it can finally play our tunes on Chromecast speakers.

As with all apps that offer Chromecast support, you don't need to explicitly do anything to trigger it.
